New Whitepaper: The VEC500 and 4K 60fps Compression in Defense Applications

April 14, 2026

As defense video systems push toward higher resolutions, faster frame rates, and richer metadata, the challenge is no longer whether 4K 60 fps video is valuable; it is how to move it across real-world links without overwhelming the network. That is the focus of Delta Digital Video’s latest whitepaper, The VEC500 and 4K 60fps Compression in Defense Applications,” authored by James Spriet, EW/ISR SME and Mission Systems Lead.

The paper opens with the core problem: a 4K 60 fps sensor with 4:2:2 10-bit color can generate roughly 10 Gbps of raw video, while many tactical datalinks top out under 300 Mbps. In other words, compression is not optional. The real question is which codec to use, at what bitrate, with what latency tradeoff, and with what consequences when the link degrades.

From there, the whitepaper explores why 4K at 60 fps matters in defense applications, from long-range target discrimination to improved temporal resolution for Video Moving Target Indication (VMTI) and more frequent metadata updates for geolocation and targeting workflows. It also breaks down the strengths and tradeoffs of H.264, H.265, and JPEG-XS, showing where each codec fits in ISR and mission video architectures.

At the center of the discussion is the VEC500, Delta Digital Video’s OEM encoder module. The paper details how the VEC500 compresses 4K 60 fps video using H.264, H.265, or optionally JPEG-XS, multiplexes STANAG 4609-compliant KLV metadata, applies AES-256 encryption, and delivers all of that in a 3.6-ounce, 10-watt board-level package with SDI or MIPI CSI-2 input and standard Ethernet output.

Rather than treating video compression as a generic feature, this whitepaper puts it in the context of real defense use cases. It is written for sensor OEMs, platform integrators, and video architects working on systems that need standards-compliant 4K encoding over constrained links, including UAS, manned ISR platforms, ground vehicle sensor suites, counter-UAS systems, and network video distribution architectures.

For teams evaluating how to carry higher-fidelity video without breaking link budgets or SWaP limits, this paper offers a practical look at the trade space and where the VEC500 fits.
